Vitex Agnus Cactus

Vitex agnus cactus is a small deciduous tree that grows in Asia, Europe, and North America. It is a violet blue, 8-10 cm flower, which bears slender spikes. It is also known or commonly called as "chaste berry". It has an irregular outline, and is round in shape. It is moderately dense, grows at a fast rate, and has a fine texture. This tree spread around 15-20 feet and has a height of around 10-15 feet. This tree is mainly planted where honey is marketed for surplus honey production. The parts, which are commonly used, are roots, flowers, leaves and bark.

It has not been investigated for its therapeutic effects. During the middle ages, this plant became a food spice at monasteries where it was called as 'monk's pepper.' The berry, which the plant bares, is a tonic herb for both male and female reproductive systems. The fruit covering is fleshy and the fruit is black in color. Chaste berry is used as the common name for virtex because the Athenian women used the leaves of this plant in their beds to keep themselves chaste during the feasts of Ceres.

Uses of vitex agnus cactus; it is used for foster rural development and it supports sustainable land care. It is popularly used to treat ovarian insufficiency, urine bleeding and acne in teenagers. People commonly use it these days in allopath for making medicines for hormonal balance. This plant can handle disorder like migraine and acne, which occur during menstrual cycle. This tree can help in the balance of estrogen and progesterone production by ovaries. If one has irregular periods then it can be regulated with the help of this herb.

The caution, which should be taken, is that the women should not use it during pregnancy. Mostly, this berry is given to women to regulate the pituitary gland. When the chaste tree is in powdered form, it is made available in tablet or capsules forms. Side effects have not been seen much, but itching and skin rashes have been found in a small percentage of women. The seeds of chaste tree are generally used for making tincture of the chaste tree. The men use this tree to depress the male androgen hormones; this hormone is responsible for male sex drive. If women suffer from heavy bleeding during periods then chaste tree medicines should be taken.

It helps in reducing breast pain in women, the clear effect is not known but it has been seen that it have a significant effect in reducing breast pain. The adverse effects, which this vitex agnus cactus have are; nausea, acne, pruritus, menstrual disorders, headache and rashes although it is a safe herbal medicine. Clinical researches have been done since beginning on this tree and many useful conclusions are been drawn. In addition, it is the result of these clinical researches that medicine made from this tree are been said to be safe and effective. Some side effects are there but they are associated with every medication so that can be avoided.
